An Introduction to The African Diaspora Past and Present Presentation
An Introduction to The African Diaspora Past and Present Presentation
This presentation is an introduction to the African Diaspora and global Black History. Students will begin with defining “historical erasure” in order to better interrogate their current understandings of Black History. Next, the students will define the concept of the African Diaspora through our premiere African Diaspora map and the “Faces of The Diaspora” activity. Next, students will be able to explore three major historical events to further their understanding of global African history and how it has been erased. The case studies selected are The Haitian Revolution, The Mali Empire, and Maroonage/ Enslaved Resistance. Based on how much time the presenter has, one can allow students to select one of the three historical case studies to explore. If the presenter has 90 minutes they should be able to complete the entire presentation. If only 30 minutes are available, this is enough time to present the core opening(slides 1-9) and choose one additional case study section. Our notes also include additional questions for group discussion or personal assignments. Each section is accompanied by learning objectives and each slide includes teachers’ notes and questions for students.
